Shawn Meredith and Kevin Carr have been inducted into the National Adaptive Sports Hall of Fame in the summer competition and summer contributor categories, respectively. The Adaptive Sports Hall of Fame was created to honor individuals who have made a significant impact in the field of summer and winter adaptive sports as well as athletes who have excelled in sport.

Move United's Shuan Butcher with Hall of Fame Inductee Shawn Meredith

Shawn Meredith was inducted in the Summer Competition category, which recognizes an individual athlete who has, in their participation in national and international competition, distinguished themselves through outstanding performance and superior sportsmanship over the span of at least three years. Criteria for consideration include race results, team participation, innovation, and contribution to their sport.

Meredith, a native of Sterling, Virginia, has a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was a varsity athlete on their world-renowned wheelchair track team. Meredith earned numerous national championships, national records, and four world records while at Illinois. He also represented Team USA twice at the Paralympic Games in 1992 and 1996, winning a total of 5 gold and one silver medals.

He also played wheelchair rugby for the Fighting Illini, the first collegiate team to qualify for the National Championship tournament. After moving south in 1999, Meredith was a player and assistant coach for the 2004, 2005, & 2016 United States Wheelchair Rugby Association Division I National Champion Texas Stampede. He is currently the coordinator of the CELTA teacher training program for the English Language Center at The University of Texas at Austin.

“It is an incredible honor to be inducted into the Move United Adaptive Sports Hall of Fame (HOF),” Meredith said. “I am humbled to be included among the amazing athletes, dedicated coaches and other selfless contributors that have previously received this award since its inception in 1970. Countless people have contributed to my athletic success, from recreational therapists that introduced me to adaptive sports to the event coordinators, coaches, teammates, competitors, and volunteers that encouraged and supported me along the way. I would like to specifically recognize my mentor, coach, and long-time friend Marty Morse (HOF 2001) for his immense contributions to my development as student and as an athlete.”

Kevin Carr was inducted in the Summer Contributor Category, which recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to adaptive sports, including innovative techniques, specialized equipment, program development, coaching, or administration, management, or education.

Move United CEO Glenn Merry, right, with Adaptive Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Kevin Carr

Carr is the owner of Creating Ability and has served the adaptive sports community nationwide since 1999. He has developed most of the cutting edge equipment that allows individuals with physical disabilities to enjoy and experience accessibility in paddlesports. Carr has continuously innovated new equipment and adaptations to reduce barriers through adaptive paddling seating systems, paddle adaptations, and most recently with expansion into transfer assistance devices for paddlesports, cycling, and sled hockey.

His creativity and ability to design products, combined with his genuine interest in applied feedback from athletes, coaches, instructors, adapted sport professionals and program leaders, has enabled him to produce products that enable disabled athletes to maximize their independent skill and ability. “The gift I’ve been given is to be able to create ability in others through adaptive design,” Carr said. “My words will be forgotten tomorrow, but the joy that others experience by overcoming limitations will last- and that is the blessing.”

Move United, the national leader in community-based adaptive sports, is seeking a host city and sports partner for a national adaptive sports competition in 2027 and 2028.

Celebrating the end of the summer sport season, The Hartford Nationals conducted by Move United encompasses a youth and adult competition component. The weeklong event, which occurs annually in July, is for youth, adult, and masters athletes with a physical disability, visual impairment, or intellectual disability.

The Hartford Nationals has moved to a 2-year cycle for the host city. It is the intention of the organization to move the event around the country every two years, with the desire to rotate between the West, East, and Central regions. The 2021 and 2022 events were hosted in metro Denver, Colorado, the 2023 and 2024 events were held in Hoover/Birmingham, Alabama, and the 2025 and 2026 events are hosted by Grand Rapids, Michigan.

A strong host city will be able to deliver an outstanding event for athletes, coaches, family members, supporters, and the general public. Host cities should have accessible venues and hotel properties, be attractive as a vacation destination, and is an affordable location for families attending the weeklong national championship event.

This annual event dates back to 1957 and the junior portion of the championship is now the largest annual multi-sport event for young athletes with physical, visual, and/or intellectual impairments in the United States. It is expected that over 400 athletes, 100 coaches, 500 volunteers, as well as families, friends, and spectators help bring the event to life.

Move United is an affiliate of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee. This event serves as an opportunity for individuals to advance along the athlete pipeline that may one day lead them to the Paralympic Games. Athletes must be classifiable under the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) classification code and must meet qualifying standards according to classification and age divisions in order to be eligible to compete. The sports contested at the event include archery, paratriathlon, para powerlifting, shooting, swimming, track and field, and wheelchair tennis. International athletes and/or teams are welcome with a dual medal system utilized.

Move United will evaluate bids based on various criteria, including accessible venues and hotel properties, experience in sport event management, support of the local community, a strong local organizing committee (LOC) with the ability to generate local event sponsorships and resources, sophisticated venues and hotel properties, and affordability of the event for participants.

Bids for the 2027-2028 competitions will be accepted until August 29, 2025. Prospective hosts can check out the full Request for Proposals at www.moveunitedsport.org/events/nationals/host-nationals/.

Forbes has included Move United on its new Accessibility 100 List, which highlights and recognizes the top 100 global impact-makers in accessibility-related fields like communication, mobility, education, software, consumer products, robotics, sports and recreation, travel, the workplace, the arts, and more. Companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, MIT, Nike, NBCUniversal, SalesForce, Spectrum, and others were also part of the list.

Move United, the national leader in community-based sports and recreation for individuals with disabilities, uses the power of sport to push what’s possible for people with disabilities, confronting ignorance, fueling conversation, and inciting action that leads us to a world where everyone’s included. “We believe sports have the power to change the world, “said Move United Chief Executive Officer Glenn Merry said. “Through adaptive sports, we show what people with disabilities are capable of so that it’s no longer a surprise, so that they’re not always an inspiration.”

Through a national network of 245 member organizations across 45 states and the District of Columbia, over 125,000 youth and adults with disabilities each year have the opportunity to live to their fullest potential. In 2024, Move United granted over $3 million to local adaptive sports organizations that are part of the Move United member network. The nonprofit continues to expand opportunities for athletes with a disability and has a goal of being accessible to 90% of the U.S. population when the Paralympics returns to LA in 2028.

In 2024, 34 Move United sanctioned competitions in 24 states saw 2,311 adaptive athletes compete in several sports, which served as a qualifier for The Hartford Nationals conducted by Move United last summer in Hoover, Alabama where 397 athletes competed in seven different sports.

The organization’s Inclusive Playbook has reached over 220,000 youth, changing disability perspectives. New this year, Move United created some new Adapted Sports Guides, which are intended to help break down barriers to inclusion for athletes with disabilities without altering rules for athletes without disabilities or imposing significant administrative challenges on State High School Associations. So far, guides (which are free) have been developed for Track & Field, Swimming, Wheelchair Tennis, and Boccia, with more sports to follow.

In addition, 1,370 veterans and their family members were served as part of the Move United Warfighters program, which provides access to adaptive sports and recreation for free of charge, including through the USA Wheelchair Football League.

“We are honored that Move United is included in the Forbes Accessibility 100, along with so many of our colleagues, partners and allies in the disability and adaptive sports movement. Forbes thank you for elevating the visibility of the disability community,” Merry said.

In 2024, the organization received the Rings of Gold Award from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee and in 2021 was recognized by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with its Sports Award. Move United also produces an award-winning podcast and a nationally-recognized adaptive sports magazine.

The Hartford Nationals conducted by Move United, the largest and longest-running national sport championship event for athletes with a physical disability, visual impairment, and/or intellectual disability, will take place in Grand Rapids, July 11-17. A first for the city and only the second time in Michigan, the competition is hosted locally by the West Michigan Sports Commission (WMSC) and Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports.

New to the competition lineup this year is boccia. Other contested sports include archery, para powerlifting, paratriathlon, shooting, swimming, track and field, and wheelchair and para standing tennis.

Athletes competing must have qualified through one of more than 35 sanctioned competitions that took place across the country throughout the Move United member network, a national governing body, or High School Athletic Association sanctioned event. In 2024, 397 athletes with disabilities and over 150 coaches from 34 states and the District of Columbia participated, with those numbers expected to increase this year.

“This national competition has been a stepping stone for many athletes to progress and compete at an international level, including the Paralympic Games,” said Move United CEO Glenn Merry. “In fact, 62 percent of the athletes that represented Team USA at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris either competed at this event or participated in another Move United program or event.”

During the event, The Hartford –joined by Paralympic gold medalist and wheelchair basketball player Matt Scott—will surprise a group of 4 athletes with custom-fit adaptive sports equipment. In addition, one athlete, nominated by their peers, will receive The Hartford’s Human Achievement Award. This honor recognizes an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the adaptive sports movement and serves as a role model to others. The award includes a $2,500 grant to support the recipient’s training and travel as they pursue their athletic goals.

“The Hartford Nationals is more than a competition—it’s a celebration of resilience, excellence, and community,” said The Hartford’s Chief Marketing and Customer Officer, Claire Burns. “We continue our mission to increase participation in adaptive sports by making competitions, local events, and equipment more accessible to youth and adult athletes. Through our long-standing partnership with Move United, we are proud to help remove barriers, creating more opportunities for athletes of all abilities to experience the transformative power, and sense of belonging, that sport can bring.”

In addition to the competitions taking place, clinics and educational sessions will include sports such as sitting volleyball, adaptive judo, para pickleball, wheelchair softball, and tennis. Paralympic Gold Medalist Daniel Romanchuk and Susannah Scaroni will also lead a track clinic and Tatyana McFadden, one of Team USA’s most decorated summer Paralympic athletes of all time, will participate in activities throughout the week. Other Paralympic athletes, such as Rudy Garcia-Tolson, Amanda McGrory, and Bobby Body will serve as announcers during competition.

The local organizing committee is spearheaded by the West Michigan Sports Commission, who competed through a nationwide bid process to host the event in 2025 and 2026, with support from Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports. Local venues hosting competition events throughout the week include Calvin University’s Gainey Athletic Facility (track & field), Calvin University’s Venema Aquatic Center (swimming), Mary Free Bed YMCA (archery and para powerlifting), Millennium Park (paratriathlon), MSA Woodland (boccia, shooting, opening and closing ceremonies), and MVP Athletic Club (tennis).

“It’s an honor for the region and state to host The Hartford Nationals in Michigan, and we are excited to showcase our many athletic venues, including our state-of-the-art Mary Free Bed YMCA, as competition sites for this prestigious event,” said Mike Guswiler, president of the West Michigan Sports Commission. “Our organization is no stranger to Olympic-style sporting events, regularly hosting the Meijer State Games of Michigan plus the USA Masters Games, State Games of America and Transplant Games of America in the past. We are thrilled to partner with Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports to now host this multi-sport event that allows hundreds of athletes with disabilities to compete on a national stage.”

Here at Move United, we believe in the transformative power of adaptive sports for veterans and service members. We’ve seen firsthand how sports rehabilitation can ignite new passions, build confidence, and foster incredible communities. That’s why we are incredibly proud and grateful for our partnership with Boeing.

A Shared Commitment to Those Who Served

Boeing understands the immense commitment and sacrifice made by individuals serving in the U.S. military and recognizes the critical skills they bring to the workforce and their communities after their service ends. This shared appreciation for our nation’s heroes is at the heart of their dedication to our mission, making them a proud and vital partner of Move United and the Move United Warfighters program through 2026.

Since its inception by members of the 10th Mountain Division to serve injured Vietnam veterans, we’ve proudly served over 20,800 Warfighters and their family members, including those injured in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, providing all services completely free of cost.

Fueling Our Mission

Boeing’s generous partnership is crucial in allowing us to continue and expand our work empowering veterans through adaptive sports participation. One of our main goals through this incredible partnership is to provide adaptive sports opportunities to at least 200 additional wounded, injured, and ill veterans annually. These opportunities are more than just activities; they are pathways to recovery, independence, and a renewed sense of purpose.

From the Invictus Games and Beyond

Boeing’s support of the Warfighters program enables Move United to provide preparation, training and post-game services for past and future Invictus Games competitors. This means veterans who dream of competing on an international stage have the opportunity to train and prepare with us. For past competitors, it offers a vital pathway to continue leading a healthy, active lifestyle long after the games conclude.

Are you a Move United member, eligible for the Warfighters program, who has represented or trained for Team US at the Invictus Games? You could be eligible to apply for up to $2,500 to support your adaptive sports participation in Move United programs and events! These funds can help cover equipment, travel, and competition fees. To learn more and apply, simply reach out to Dennis Bardelli at dbardelli@moveunitedsport.org.

Strengthening Our Impact, Together

Beyond directly supporting athletes, Boeing’s sponsorship empowers us to improve our programming and expand our reach in several significant ways:

  • Training the Next Generation of Instructors: To ensure the highest quality of service for our veterans, we will provide in-person adaptive sports training annually to at least 300 instructors nationwide. This ensures they have the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively serve our veteran community.
  • Engaging the Boeing Community: This partnership also creates wonderful opportunities for Boeing employees to get involved! We’ll be offering 200 local volunteer opportunities each year at five key Boeing locations. This initiative not only fosters employee involvement but also strengthens community ties and directly benefits local adaptive sports organizations.
  • Supporting Our Network of Organizations: A substantial part of the funding will directly support 24 Move United member organizations across the country. These organizations offer year-round adaptive sports programs to wounded veterans, featuring a diverse array of activities like golf, therapeutic riding, surfing, cycling, swimming, track and field, archery, SCUBA, alpine skiing, amputee soccer, and so much more!

Move United, the national leader in community-based adapted sports and recreation, has created sport-specific guides to help coaches integrate athletes with disabilities into high school athletic programs.

Each guide, which is available for free, focuses on an individual sport. Currently, guides have been developed for Track & Field, Swimming, Wheelchair Tennis, and Boccia, with more sports to follow.

“The Move United Adapted Sport Guide for Wheelchair Tennis is going to be an incredible asset to every young wheelchair athlete looking to integrate into their high school tennis team!,” said Jason Harnett, Director of Wheelchair Tennis for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Head Coach for Team USA Wheelchair Tennis. “Having all of the rules, regulations, classification standards, educational resources, and overall breakdown on the introduction to wheelchair tennis, will benefit any administrators, coaches, and athletes looking to get their very own program started. We here at the USTA are proud to partner with Move United in pushing this sport forward.”

The guides are intended to help break down barriers to inclusion for athletes with disabilities without altering rules for athletes without disabilities or imposing significant administrative challenges on State High School Associations.

“The Move United Adapted Sport Guides are a valuable resource for high school athletics, providing schools with strategies to ensure more students have opportunities to participate. These guides offer practical recommendations for high school coaches to support a wider range of athletes in track and field, swimming, wheelchair tennis and boccia. Expanding participation allows more students to experience the benefits of high school sports—teamwork, perseverance, and the excitement of competition,” said Julie Cochran, Director of Sports & Middle Schools at the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

The resources were created in partnership with the governing bodies of the respective sport. Additional sports will be highlighted in future guides over the next two years. Move United, the national leader in community-based sports and recreation for individuals with disabilities, is hosting its annual Education Conference in partnership with the National Ability Center May 5-7, 2025, in Park City, Utah.

With the theme of “Disability Inclusion: Catalyzing Change through Sport,” the conference brings together adaptive athletes, sport professionals, and sport providers focusing on relevant education, awareness, and skills to instill change.

Over 450 attendees, from more than 40 states and the District of Columbia, will come together for informative educational sessions, hands-on, skills-based learning workshops and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. Attendees represent a variety of affiliations including Move United member organizations, general sport organizations, city parks & recreation departments, Olympic and Paralympic sport national governing bodies, VA hospital staff, wounded warfighters, occupational and recreation therapists, academic professionals and college students, disability resource groups, and more.

The conference includes pre-conference trainings, nearly 100 educational sessions and workshops, and an exhibitor hall. Topics will center around the themes of sport-specific instruction, inclusion in schools and universities, intersections with medical professionals, and nonprofit management.

Keynote speakers include 4-time Paralympian Danelle Umstead, a motivational speaker, Dancing with the Stars phenom and founder of the Sisters in Sports Foundation, U.S. Army Veteran and Paralympian William “Garrett” Schoonover, a healthcare professional and current Parafencing National Team member, and 2-time Paralympic medalist Ali Ibanez.

This year’s conference is locally hosted by the National Ability Center (NAC), a Move United Chapter that provides world-class adaptive recreation and outdoor adventures for individuals, families and groups with varying physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities. Rooted in Park City, UT celebrating 40 years of programming, with a satellite location in Moab, the NAC empowers over 5,500 competitive athletes, children, active-duty, veterans and others yearly. Through on-campus and community-based programming, with individual and group activities, participants build self-esteem, confidence and lifetime skills. The NAC hosts over 30,000 experiences and lessons each year including alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, horseback riding, cycling, swimming, rafting, archery, among others. In 2023, the 9,400 square foot McGrath Mountain Center opened to serve the NAC’s adaptive ski and snowboard programs, made possible by a historic 50-year land lease donated by Vail Resorts. With Vail’s EpicPromise as the National Ability Center’s largest annual community partner, the NAC is globally recognized as a leader in adaptive sports.

Conference sponsors include Nike, Boeing, and the University of Utah. For more information about the conference or to register to attend, visit moveunitedsport.org/education/2025-move-united-education-conference/.
